One quiet Friday night, Emma got a babysitting job for the Hendersons, who just moved into town. Their 8-year-old son, Lucas, seemed shy. During a quick meet-up, he often looked at the dark corners of their big, dim house. The parents left fast, saying they had an important event to go to. They told Emma to make sure Lucas was in bed by 9 PM and made it clear she shouldn't go into the attic.
As the evening went on, Emma noticed something odd about Lucas. He talked like someone much older than 8 and wasn't into usual kid stuff. Instead, he liked strange, old toys and books. The house made weird noises, but Emma thought it was just because it was old.
After they ate, Lucas showed Emma around the house but didn't go near the attic. He knew a lot about the house and talked about people who used to live there in a way that made Emma uneasy. When it was time for bed, Lucas didn't want to go and started talking about his "friends" in the shadows, saying they wanted to meet Emma.
Emma got really worried when, in bed, Lucas said, "They don't like it when I sleep. They have more fun when we're in the attic." Remembering the parents said not to go there, Emma felt scared but thought Lucas was just trying not to go to sleep. She made sure his nightlight was on and left his room.
The house became very quiet, making Emma feel more nervous. Then she heard footsteps from the attic. Her heart beat fast, wondering if she should check it out. Lucas had said something about the attic, but was it a warning or an invite?
Worried for Lucas, Emma decided to go to the attic. The door, locked before, was now slightly open. Inside, it was really dark. Turning on her flashlight, she saw old stuff and then Lucas standing there.
"Lucas, why are you up here?" she asked, scared.
He turned around, and his eyes were shining weirdly. He smiled and said, "I'm not Lucas," in a creepy voice. "He likes playing with us, in the shadows. We've been waiting for you."
Emma realized then that Lucas wasn't a normal kid. He was something much older, a creature that liked the dark. Lucas was just a cover for whatever was really in the house.
In that scary moment, Emma knew the Hendersons hadn't hired her just to look after Lucas but for something much darker. She ran out, hearing Lucas—or whatever it was—laughing behind her.
Emma never went back, and the Hendersons left soon after. The scary night stayed with Emma forever, a reminder of the scary things that can be hiding in normal-looking places, changing how she saw the world.
